Summertime Garden Workday
On June 18, 2022, volunteers from Love A Sea Turtle, ECU, and throughout the community attended the first Garden and Orchard Workday of the summer. The goal of the event was to bring together members of the community and students/staff of ECU to work together on harvesting produce in the garden, planting new seeds and conducting some much-needed maintenance.
Many of the volunteers at the event were first-time gardeners who were able to learn some new skills while some of the other volunteers had gardens of their own at home. Regardless of the level of experience of each volunteer, without their participation, this event would not have been able to happen. Thanks to the volunteers who participated, we were able to harvest onions, garlic, lettuce, arugula and more. While volunteers were able to take some of the freshly picked produce home with them, the rest of the harvest was distributed back into the community.
Other work that was completed included staking down signs that were affected by heavy rain, planting bean seeds for the next harvest and thanks to Love A Sea Turtle, a new pizza oven was built in the Community Orchard.

The Garden Workday was led by Chad Carwein, ECU’s Sustainability Manager, and organized by Demetrice Sheard, a member of ECU’s Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement.
