Alternative Break Experience
The Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement (CLCE) is hosting its Alternative Break Experience (ABE) for students who are not leaving the Greenville area for spring break from March 6th to March 10th This experience provides students with the opportunity to serve in the local Greenville area and to travel across other communities across the state of North Carolina.
Some of the locations that students will be participating in this spring include Cape Carteret Coastal Foundation where students and CLCE staff will clean off the shoreline and restore coastal habits for a stronger environment. In addition, participants will be heading to Raleigh, NC to learn more about Democratic engagement while also exploring the three branches of government with trips to the Governor’s mansion, the general assembly, and the NC Supreme Court. Additional sites include the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina where packing and sorting of goods can be in the facility and delivering food to community partners. Lastly, the Community Garden and Orchard is located here in Greenville, NC and the Women Leading Little Washington is in Washington, NC.
Each site will have 6-8 students and one staff lead and one student lead. In the past, ABE events have been held in Atlantic Beach doing litter cleanups and other environmental duties, and in Puerto Rico where students helped with the mangrove restoration project for the plants to grow properly. ECU continues to provide service as the ABE experience incorporates students with the skills to address social, economic, political, environmental, spiritual, and cultural issues while challenging them to reflect upon their experience and the ability to make lasting social change in our local, regional, and global community.
Purple Pantry Donations
Purple Pantry our on-campus food pantry is seeking donations of all items to restock our shelves. Some of these items include household products and necessities such as toothpaste, tissue, soap, and female menstrual products. Furthermore, we are trying to diversify our shelves so if you can please try to donate other items besides can goods as we already have an influx of those products. And lastly, to continue to support Purple Pantry and its efforts we will be having our first ever Pack the Pantry Week which is our virtual food drive where students, faculty, and staff can donate to replenish our shelves.
